Why we built Seldeo

The bet

Every open social network I've used in the last decade grows by solving one problem well: how do we get more strangers into your feed? The rank algorithm, the follow suggestions, the "people you may know," the invite loops — they all push in the same direction. More reach. More strangers. More content per scroll.

Seldeo is built on the opposite bet. The people who matter most to your life — your parents, your closest friends, the people you grieve with, the friends you've known since you were nine — are almost never the people the reach-maximisers push in front of you. They post less. They post smaller. They don't chase virality. The systems that surface popular strangers are, by construction, the same systems that bury the people you actually love.

We think there is enough demand for a calmer social product — something between the broadcast feed and the private group chat — to sustain a real company. Not the largest company in the world, but a real one. Seldeo is our attempt at that product.

Three design commitments

The bet only pays off if we make three design commitments and stick to them.

1. Small by default, expressive when you want it to be. Posts on Seldeo default to your friends list. You can widen the audience (Circles, or fully public) or narrow it (a single Circle) with one tap in the audience picker. The picker sits on every post-composer surface, and the audience never resets after a public post so a moment of public sharing never leaks into subsequent private ones. The Circles article walks through the mechanic in more detail.

2. Durable, not disposable. Stories disappear after 24 hours because they're supposed to. Posts do not. Memorials outlive a browser tab — a topic we treat seriously enough to make it a first-class feature, described in Memorials are a first-class Seldeo feature. When you keep something on Seldeo, it stays.

3. Ranked to be quiet. The feed ranker on Seldeo has a specific goal: help you catch up with the people you follow, then let you close the app. It is not optimised for time-in-app. It is not optimised for daily active users. It is optimised for "did the important thing you missed show up?" and, when the important things run out, "does the feed cheerfully signal that you're caught up?" We wrote more about this in A quieter feed.

What's on the app today

  • Posts, stories, and reels with per-post audience controls.
  • Direct and group chat, end-to-end encrypted between paired devices.
  • Voice and video calls with picture-in-picture on iOS and Android.
  • Memorial pages that can outlive the owning account.
  • Licensed background music on reels from a curated library.

What's coming next

We publish our roadmap in News as it firms up. In the next few months, expect:

  • Circles v2 — smart audience suggestions so you never post to "everyone" by accident.
  • Voice memos on posts — reply to a photo with 30 seconds of audio.
  • Legacy contacts — designate up to three people who can memorialize your account after you're gone.

Where to find us

Seldeo is on the App Store and Google Play. The team is small, mostly based in North Carolina, and reachable at hello@seldeo.com or, for anything you'd like us to fix, support@seldeo.com.

We publish here regularly. If a post here made you nod, tell a friend, and we'll take that as the highest compliment you can pay a small company trying to build a calmer place.
