Hashtags on Seldeo

By The Seldeo Support TeamUpdated 2026-09-08

Hashtags let you label a post by topic. Type them anywhere in the caption with a leading ##gardening, #sunday_baking — and Seldeo picks them up when you publish.

How to add them

Write them into the caption as part of the text. There is no separate hashtag field; Sourdough, attempt four #baking #sourdough just works. A single post can carry up to 30 hashtags — anything beyond that is ignored rather than blocking the post.

How tags are normalized

Behind the scenes, Seldeo normalizes every tag so that spelling variants count as the same topic:

  • Case is folded. #Baking, #BAKING, and #baking are the same tag.
  • Allowed characters are letters, numbers, and underscores. The tag ends at the first character that isn't one of those.
  • Tags that don't survive normalization (for example, a bare # or symbols-only tag) are simply dropped.

What you typed still appears in your caption exactly as you wrote it — normalization affects how the tag is indexed, not how your text looks.

Reserved tags

A small set of tags is reserved and won't be indexed on ordinary posts: #ad, #sponsored, #verified, #seldeo, and #official. These words carry meaning about disclosure and authenticity that a caption shouldn't be able to claim for itself. You can still write the words in your text; they just don't function as tags.

Where hashtags show up today

Right now, hashtags are stored with your post and shown in the caption. Tag-based browsing — tapping a tag to see other posts using it — is not available yet; it's part of the discovery work we're building next. We'd rather say that plainly than pretend the surface exists.

What tags do not change today: adding a hashtag does not widen your post's audience. A friends-only post with #baking is still visible to your friends only.

Using them well

  • Tag what the post is actually about; two or three accurate tags beat twenty speculative ones.
  • Prefer established spellings (#bookclub, not #b00kclub) — normalization can't merge creative variants.
  • Underscores are the only separator: #sunday_baking.
